Interesting places / Charles V’s Castle

City: Hondarribia

This is a fortress built on the remains of a medieval castle situated on the highest point of the hill in the historic quarter, dominating the Bidasoa estuary.

It is said that Sancho Abarca de Navarra was responsible for its early construction; its extension and fortification in 1190 is attributed to another king of Navarra, Sancho el Sabio.

The simple facade corresponds to the period of Carlos V. It was both a castle and a palace. It had six floors for the troops’ rooms, storage areas, the ammunition and gunpowder depot, dungeons and stables. In 1968, it was fitted out as a Tourism State-owned Hotel.
